Abstract

The following chapter overviews current research on how the use of technology influences mental health of special populations of adolescents including sexual and gender minorities, adolescents exposed to early adversity, and adolescents with health problems and disabilities. Literature is presented on the “natural” risks and benefits of technology use and how technology can be used as an intervention tool. Common trends emerged, suggesting that youth in these populations use technology to gather information and seek social support. Most of these populations were also found to be at increased risk of being victims and, at times, perpetrators of cyberbullying. We conclude that youth in these groups would benefit from further research evaluating the use of technology in training and intervention strategies focused on improving mental health outcomes. Finally, we present a case study and provide recommendations for clinicians working with adolescents in these populations.
