In Brazil, tourism is seen as an economic activity belonging to the service sector, unlike what happens in many other countries in the world such as England, Germany, where the activity is considered part of the secondary sector, the industry. Still, there are several concepts that comes from the industry sector, that applied to services, can generate benefits for tourism destinations and the different stakeholders involved, as the customers, suppliers, public or private managers. In this global context, the market is increasingly competitive, and companies need tools to succeed in the market. The challenge of this paper is, through a literature review and research using secondary data, relate the history of tourism in Brazil and identify concepts of innovation produced in the industry sector, that can guide potential improvements in tourism and directly on the competitiveness of tourist destinations in the country. The article, conclude that innovation is still an unexplored line of research precisely when related to tourism, but the stimulus for study and research in the area and continuous investment can greatly contribute to the competitiveness of tourist destinations in the country.
