This chapter reviews cost-effective tests to determine neuromuscular function and indicators of athletic performance regarding agility and aerobic capacity. Tests are recommended that depict neuromuscular function and abnormal mechanics during activities such as landing from a jump, cutting, or side-stepping. The most common field tests for assessing agility for a variety of sports are described, including the t-test, pro-agility test, Illinois agility test, and the 505 test. The multistage fitness test, commonly used to estimate maximal oxygen uptake, and the two Yo-Yo intermittent recovery tests, commonly used to evaluate an athlete’s ability to repeatedly perform intermittent exercise, are detailed. Reliability references are provided for each test, along with normative data of a wide variety of athletes sorted according to sport, gender, and age.
