Abstract

The purpose of this was to explore the possibility of developing a new cryogenic austenitic steel system which would substitute manganese and aluminum for the strategic and expensive alloying elements nickel and chromium. The relation between alloying elements and structures, such as the stability of austenite, existing phases, and their contribution to performance, had been studied. On the basis of this information, several new austenitic steels were developed for different applications.
