Abstract

Sydkraft AB has constructed the first combined cycle power station in the world, which uses wood shavings as fuel. It is situated at Värnamo, in Sweden, about 250 km north of Malmö. The technology employed in the power station is based on gasification in a pressurized fluidized bed gasifier. The gasifier technology has been developed in a joint venture between Sydkraft AB and A. Ahlstrom OY, of Finland. The plant at Värnamo supplies electricity to the grid system and heat to the district heating network of the town of Värnamo. The total capacity of the plant is 6 MW (electrical) and 9 MW (thermal). The wood shavings used have a calorific value of 18 MW. This paper describes the Varnamo plant and provides a status report on development work.
