Abstract

This review covers the whole order Spirochaetales with its five genera Spirochaeta, Cistispira, Treponema, Borrelia and Leptospira. The author discusses the outer sheath, axial fibrils, protoplasmic cylinder, cytoplasmic membrane, host-associated spirochetes (Brine Shrimp Association, Swine Dysentery, Syphilis, Skin-Lesions: Yaws, Gastrointestinal Tract, Xylophagous Insects). The review is up-to-date and concentrates especially on morphology. There are 24 electron micrographs and 239 references.
