Abstract

Using the two-phase technique, it is possible to immobilize protoplasts in spherical beads of various sizes under mild conditions. The protoplasts remain viable and appear to be stabilized by the polymeric matrix. Consequently, immobilized protoplasts can be handled more easily and used for various purposes, such as studies on cellular processes and regeneration, production of metabolites, and bioconversions.
