Abstract

The kidney serves important functions for body homeostasis, including (1) regulation of water and electrolyte metabolism, (2) regulation of acid-base homeostasis, (3) detoxification and excretion of waste products, (4) reabsorption of glucose and other essential metabolites, (5) endocrine function, and (6) synthesis of glucose under fasting conditions. Perturbation of these functions is seen in a variety of pathophysiological conditions conditions.
