Abstract

Drug consumption is a personal and social problem that has been approached from numerous fronts and different perspectives. Studies on risk and protection factors in the use and abuse of drugs are abundant and, whereas researchers initially focused on only a few factors, currently a more integral and synthetic perspective is preferred. This article indeed tries to present the psychosocial perspective of the problem of cocaine addiction. Here it is assumed that social psychology has a special integrative capacity and that it can offer an analysis model broad enough to allow for a convergence of different positions. In the first place, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Psycho-Social Model for the Study of Mental Health are reviewed. Secondly, studies of values and personality traits having the greatest impact on the problem of drug addiction are also reviewed. Finally, an analysis outline is offered that integrates and summarizes contributions in the study of factors affecting cocaine addiction. (English)
