The present paper is related with the accuracy of pulse oximeters, mainly due to the influence of the sensors used. It includes a brief introduction to the pulse oximetry operation principles, calibration procedure, and discusses main aspects related with the accuracy of measurements. The magnitudes of the errors due variations of the wavelengths of the LEDs used are highlighted together with the risks that those errors produce to the patients, especially during conditions of low levels of oxygen saturation in arterial blood. The paper suggests a higher control of producers during pulse oximeter sensor production or the selection of their suppliers. © 2013 Springer.
