The purpose of a classification is to group together related objects in order to facilitate comparative investigations. A classification should consist of as few categories as possible without forcing together objects for which the evidence of a relationship is inadequate. The subdivision of categories is good insofar as it is justified by sound data. Although it is impossible to avoid the occasional placement of potentially related objects in separate categories, one should attempt to avoid implying that differences between such objects are greater than they really are.
