Abstract

Abstract The launching of a special new series of book-size publications by New Zealand's oldest research institution has to be an event of note in its 120-year history. Since early in this century the Bulletin series has been the Geological Survey's most widely recognised outlet for major research results of diverse kinds, and one wonders whether the new venture is sufficient of a departure to justify the bibliographical disadvantages and loss of identity involved in making it a new publication series. Time will tell, however, and if the whole project proceeds as planned and the few weaknesses of this pilot study are amended, it could achieve an importance comparable with the 1 . 250,000 Geological Map of New Zealand.
