The teaching effect of medical English involves learning competence of students and teaching level of teachers, at medical college its significance has immediate influence on the vocational skills and knowledge absorbing capacity of students. As one of modern psychometric techniques, item response theory provides more insights over and above those gained from classical psychometric techniques. Using item response theory to evaluate medical English teaching effect is a new attempt. This paper presents an introduction to item response theory and demonstrates the evaluation model of the teaching effect of medical English based on item response theory. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.
