Skin imaging in aesthetic medicine

Abstract

Several procedures in aesthetic medical practice focus on improving the appearance and texture of the skin. Homogeneity of skin texture and color play an important role in facial attractiveness. Nonablative laser rejuvenation and tissue tightening using light and radiofrequency have emerged as useful treatment modalities that heat the dermis and improve skin texture by remodeling and increasing collagen. Images define the nature and extent of the problem being treated, document before-and-after comparisons, and facilitate the monitoring of skin changes over time. They also have a role as evidence in medical legal scenarios. Digital photography, skin imaging modalities, and optical imaging devices are discussed.
