Abstract

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) offers excellent views of the heart and thoracic aorta. The transesophageal echocardiogram is a useful extension of the transthoracic echocardiographic examination. TEE is a semi-invasive procedure that can be performed quickly in awake and critically ill patients, as well as intraoperatively, with minimal risk. The technology and application are rapidly progressing. In the next several years, further technological advances are certain to expand the role of transesophageal echocardiography.
