This volume contains 6 contributions on a wide range of topics. Harold Wayland in ″Intravital Microscopy″ presents a set of design criteria for a microscopy system for use primarily in the study of blood flow in the microcirculation in living animals. A prototype system of great flexibility which meets these criteria is described in detail. This system is based on using infinity corrected objectives at their front focal planes, with the final image formed in the back focal plane of a telescopic transfer lens. In addition to the prototype system, a simplified instrument employing the same basic design principles, as well as the application of this same telescopic observation system to a servo-controlled focusing system to maintain sharp focus on moving tissue, such as the beating heart, is described.
