Abstract

This update and review of the applications of immunoassays in the clinical laboratory discusses cardiac markers, thyroid testing, nutritional assessment, tumor markers, and bone markers, as well as analytical issues such as calibration. This is the first article in a three-part continuing education series on immunology. On completion of this article the reader will be able to list three aspects of immunoassays that still present problems; identify three cardiac markers along with an advantage and a disadvantage for each; name three markers of anemia and three markers of nutritional status; and describe a cost-effective thyroid profile.
