Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis has evolved since the last century and is now a predictable and customizable treatment option for people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). With better understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of peritoneal membrane and the predictability of three-pore model, we can make precise mathematical calculations to manage electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. Significant challenges still remain that include cost and larger studies to demonstrate feasibility of nonconventional dialysates and its effects on electrolytes and acid-base. This chapter will go over peritoneal membrane physiology as it relates to handling of electrolytes and discussion of major cations and buffer system.
