Abstract

Among the main challenges for a safe operation of autonomous ship (AS) is to ensure a reliable ship to ship and ship to shore communication services in order to receive and transmit data and also to control remotely the ship in case of “Fail to safe”. The approach presented in this paper aims to show how the existing communication systems on board of conventional ship and the nowadays available technologies can be embodied to ensure a reliable and uninterruptable connectivity of the autonomous ships. So, this paper presents a model of communication for each scenario of navigation considering the availability, reliability, security and cost effectiveness of the communication service carrier.
