Abstract

(from the chapter) There is a need for more epidemiological studies of major mental disorders in African American youth to provide a better understanding of the etiology, prevalence, and unmet service needs for these youth. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among African American youth, with special attention to within group ethnic and gender differences, along with an assessment of available data and consideration of what is known about mental health service use for African American children and adolescents.
