Some recent publications on the topic of diabetic foot that show the magnitude of the problem from a social, medical and family point of view were reviewed. The main mechanisms involved in the pathogeny: peripheral neuropathy, macroangiopathy and microangiopathy, sepsis and foot deformities; as well as the most important elements to be taken into account by the health personne to prevent amputations were explained. It was concluded that diabetes education as a way of prevention from the primary health care level is the milestone to attain a 50 % reduction of the amputations related to diabetes, as it was agreed upon in San Vicente.
