An important objective of the NATO SfP project ``Monitoring of extreme flood events in Romania and Hungary using EO data{''} is the development of a dedicated sub-system, based on remote sensing and GIS technology, serving to improve the flood management and implementation of mitigation programs. The sub-system consists of a GIS database, represented by the spatial geo-referential information ensemble connected to the classical hydrological database, and of a hydrological forecast model. The main functions of this sub-system are: (a) acquisition, storage, analysis, management and exchange of raster and vector graphic information and the related attribute data for flood monitoring activities, (b) updating the information and restoring data, (e) development of thematic documents, and (d) generation of value-added information and products.
