Salmon (Salmo salar ) are distributed widely in Scotland and, in the larger rivers, run in from the sea over a long season. There is some artificial stocking but the fishery is based on a naturally regenerating stock. Grilse have provided the majority of the total catch since 1967 but salmon still predominate in the rod catch. The rod catch has constituted about 20% of the total catch over the past 8 years compared with less than 15% in the period before that.
