In this chapter, a control strategy is designed for a mechanism known as the inertia wheel pendulum (IWP). A picture of the IWP is shown in Fig. 16.1 when operating at the downward position, whereas the variables and the parameters involved are defined in Fig. 16.2. It is a pendulum with a PM brushed DC motor fixed at its free end, which actuates on a wheel. The pendulum hangs up from a point where no external torque is applied.
