Abstract

This chapter is concerned with defeasible reasoning. Following a brief discussion of the rationale for developing systems of defeasible reasoning, we shall give a detailed account of the preferred subtheories approach by Brewka [23]. This approach will be used to merge structuralism with belief revision theory. Moreover, the truth maintenance system by Doyle [47] deserves consideration since it allows for a representation of the justificatory structure of epistemic states.
