Abstract

We propose a probabilistic method for query expansion in online public access catalogs that utilizes both historical query logs and the subject headings in the library catalog. Our method creates correlations between query and document terms, allowing relevant subject headings from the corpus to be retrieved and added to a query. Experiments demonstrate an average of 31.1% performance increase over currently fielded baselines. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
