Abstract

The story of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) - the search for its cause, the struggle to prevent its spread, the yet unsuccessful search for effective vaccines and cures- is a social drama with few parallels in the history of medicine. Several elements in this story set it apart from most other medical conditions, and give a distinctive cast to many of the issues associated with coping (Epstein, 1998). It appeared out of nowhere, spread with blazing speed, and awakened a massive political and scientific response. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. All rights reserved.
