Abstract

The convergence of printing technology, caricature, and sequential visual narrative produced new mediums of communication-the comic strip, the comic book, and the graphic novel, known collectively as comics. Because comics are generally considered to be popular culture entertainment readers let down their defences and are more susceptible to persuasive messages. The persuasive power of comics can be found within the processes (encapsulation, composition, layout, and closure) by which comics are created and deciphered. Political scientists can use Hugh Rank's persuasion schema to reveal the persuasive strategies employed in comics.
