Le Monde diplomatique is a French monthly magazine specialized in international politics. At the time of writing, there were 37 foreign editions and it was translated to 20 languages (Le Monde diplomatique, 2015). In 1979, a group of Latin-American exiles launched the first issue of Le Monde diplomatique en español [Le Monde diplomatique in Spanish] in Mexico City. The content of this new magazine was composed by the translation into Spanish of the articles of the French edition of Le Monde diplomatique and by articles originally written in Spanish. Based on interviews, contracts and other documents, this paper sets out to explore the influence of the dynamics and functioning of the Mexican journalistic field in the construction of the professional identity of the individuals involved in Le Monde diplomatique en español. The discussion draws on the different forms of capital, but mainly on the concepts of symbolic capital, political capital (Bourdieu, 1986; Benson, 1999) and militant capital (Matonti y Poupeau, 2005).
