Abstract

The term gestational trophoblastic disease, englobe a group of disorders characterized by an abnormal proliferation of placental chorionic villi. The best-known varieties are the hydatidiform mole (complete and partial), invasive mole and choriocarcinoma. Epidemiological data are presented, including risk factors, and a summary review of clinical features and anatomopathological changes are emphasized. Different aspects of rarer entities such as the trophoblastic tumor of the placental implantation site and the epithelioid trophoblastic tumor are discussed. The stages proposed by FIGO are used for staging, although the use of positron emission tomography, sentinel lymph node biopsy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy are not included in the FIGO scheme. The article is illustrated with color figures and the bibliography has been selected and updated.
