Self and peer assessment are frequently facilitated through educational technologies. In this chapter, we outline theoretical frameworks of self and peer assessment, and design principles, and compare these with the affordances of current technologies. We then suggest how the digital could be harnessed more fruitfully to achieve pedagogical goals and best practice in self and peer assessment. Finally, we argue that non-technological factors (i.e., educators and learners’ knowledge, attitudes and skills) are also critical to the success of self and peer assessment.
