Abstract

Research on REBT with ADHD is limited and we believe that this chapter provides a clinician with a solid integration of understanding of treatment strategies for ADHD and where REBT can play a role. The exact role of REBT in the treatment of ADHD is an area that still needs to be further examined empirically. Given that we have research which describes the efficacy of behavior management and psychopharmacologic interventions, REBT can be utilized to treat some of the secondary emotional disturbances often seen in children with ADHD and their accompanying cognitions. We have found REBT to be helpful in terms of these secondary emotional disturbances while also assisting in the impact of irrational beliefs that may further exacerbate the symptoms associated with ADHD. Too often children and families may "live the label" and believe because of the diagnosis that they are restricted in the things that they can do. REBT can be very helpful with increasing treatment compliance, managing many of the emotive and social difficulties that may accompany the disorder, preventing further difficulties, and assist the student and family in reducing difficulties and enhancing the quality of their lives and their relationship. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
