Abstract

Multithreading is potentially a powerful way to achieve high performance in parallel programming. However, there are few tools that support multithreaded programs development. This paper presents an analysis which has led to a concept of building an autonomous monitoring system for multithreaded programs on top of which various tools can be based. Many problems specific to monitoring multithreaded programs are presented, as well as the ideas to solve them, specifically we focus on efficiency, scalability and portability of the monitoring system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
