Abstract

This paper reviews the research program carried out to establish design criteria for gabions and mattresses when used as linings under a wide range of flow conditions. The techniques involved in the construction of the Old River spillway is discussed. Comparisons are made of the design considerations of the spillway with the results obtained in the ongoing research program. Comparisons are also made between materials used in the model studies and in prototype installations.
