Abstract

Predicting abundance and stock structure of Atlantic salmon adults is discussed, with respect to data regarding smolts. Four aspects of the predictive relationship between smolts and adults are examined: 1) smolt counts in a particular river to predict adult returns and measure sea survival; 2) environmental factors; 3) spreading egg deposition over several years through multiple spawning; and 4) examining smolts to determine sea age of adults. Numbers of smolts may be used to predict returns of adults.
