Abstract

The rapid and ever-increasing population and urban activi- ties have imposed a massive demand to Urban Transportation Systems (UTS). These systems were not prepared for such events, so traffic con- gestion and defective metropolitan systems were a direct consequence of such a shortcoming. The explosion of the computing technology brought together expertise from different scientific and technical disciplines giving birth to new computing and communication paradigms. Taking advan- tage of modelling and simulation technologies we have devised a frame- work that combines the characteristics of the Multi-Agent System Devel- opment Framework, JADE, and the microscopic traffic simulator, SUMO, for the development and appraisal of multi-agent traffic solutions in contemporary transportation systems. Therefore we present a tool that can be useful to researchers and practitioners for implementing agent- based traffic control and management solutions as well as heterogeneous Artificial Societies (AS) of drivers immersed in rather realistic traffic environments.
