The airways of the conductive and transitory zone (cf. p. 9, Figs. 4 and 6) act as distributors of air among the 300 million alveoli of the respiratory zone. To serve this function they are organized into a tree-like system which extends from the trachea into the respiratory portion of the lung. It is the purpose of this chapter to study the pattern of organization of the airways, and to determine the dimensions of its elements.
