Brucellosis

Abstract

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by gram-negative, nonmotile coccobacilli adapted to intracellular replication. There are four species of Brucella that cause disease in humans: Brucella abortus, Brucella melitensis, Brucella suis, and Brucella canis. Brucellosis is a chronic systemic disease that is commonly subclinical but may produce signs and symptoms after an incubation period of 1–3 weeks. The ocular structures may be infected by hematogenous spread of the Brucella leading to chronic, smoldering uveitis that is granulomatous in nature. The disease may involve the anterior and posterior ocular structures.
