RISC (Risk Identification of Soil Contamination) is a framework for risk identification on individual sites with contaminated soil. Four computer programs were developed using this: three prototypes - RISC-HUMAN, RISC-TRANSPORT, RISC-URGENCY and one full-scale program - RISC-HUMAN (2.0). Written in Pascal for Windows, all programs provide tools, models and formal procedures for the evaluation of sites with contaminated soil. With RISC-HUMAN (prototype), human exposure via various routes can be calculated using an initial concentration of soil contamination measured. RISC-TRANSPORT is a’ simple’ model for calculating the spread of organic contaminants via groundwater. RISC-URGENCY is a priority-ranking system for former industrial sites. RISC-HUMAN (2.0) is intended for practical application during detailed site investigation. Dutch, English and German versions of the models are available.
