Abstract

An empirical study undertaken on a cross-section of UNIX users at an academic site reveals a role for an active form of help system, rather than the more usual passive kind. Sample scripts supporting this view are presented and the kind of aid required for these examples is discussed. It is then proposed that to provide such aid requires the construction and maintenance of an individual model of each user.
