Abstract

After several decades of ongoing globalization and keen competition, enterprises find themselves faced with increasing market demands on individual, customized solutions. At the same time, global markets require shorter product creation processes at lower expenses in order to remain competitive. Due to this fact the technical innovation proceeds and leads to more complex products and processes as well as an unmanageable portfolio of individual solutions. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
