Introduction to Special Section on Current Advances in the Intersection of Religiousness/Spirituality and LGBTQ+ Studies

Abstract

The relationship between religiousness/spirituality and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) studies is complex. Despite the points of tension that have existed and challenges that remain, recent efforts to navigate the intersection of LGBTQ+ studies and religion and spirituality are encouraging and point to a less polarized approach. This special section of Psychology of Religion and Spirituality is intended to invite psychologists in the psychology of religion and spirituality and in LGBTQ+ studies to explore the intersection of these areas of research and investigation, and to introduce more complexity to these areas of scientific inquiry. This is a joint publication with Spirituality in Clinical Practice, which also published a special issue this summer.
