Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is an inventory of the types of organic acids and phenols in ground water, rain water, interstitial water, river, and lake water. In addition, this chapter discusses the distribution, composition, and chemistry of organic acids and phenols. Organic acids have been divided into various classes, which are based on their acidity and geochemistry. They include: carboxylic acids, phenols, and tannins. Because of weak acidity of the phenolic group, phenols and tannins are addressed in the same chapter as carboxylic acids.
