Abstract

The pharmaceutical industry in IndiaIndiais a high-growth economical sector. The city of HyderabadHyderabadis considered as the pharma capital of IndiaIndiaas approximately 500 pharmaceutical companies are present there. However, this industry, supposedly responsible for ensuring good health among the citizenry, is actually harming collective well-being as wastewaters generated from pharmaceutical manufacturing are being released into the environment---more specifically into the aquatic environment leading to India'sIndiasecond largest river, the GodavariGodavari. The economic and health-related impacts---local, regional and global---of this phenomenon are discussed in this article. Some technological and institutional/management-related options potentially capable of mitigating pollutionPollutionare also included.
