This article discusses the meaning systems and the ideological dimensions involved in the reproduction of musical and dramaturgical canons based on models built, mainly, in the first half of the 19 th century, in the context of the stabilization and dissemination of bel canto Italian models, and of their production conditions. I advocate, through the reference to concrete production frameworks, that the need for fixation, and subsequent reproduction, of a grammar of situations and of a dramatic structure is due, on one hand, to market requirements, which stimulate the circulation of operatic goods and, on the other hand, to the needs of self-regulation of social norms and behaviours. In this context, I will focus mainly on two aspects: the representation of the nuclear family and the specific issues of gender stratification, discussing them as ideological instruments of social control.
