It was a beautiful Friday afternoon and I had just finished tabulating the responses to the bonus from the Organic Chemistry exam I was grading. I was very much interested in the students' answers to the following question: Bonus-I am due to have my third child soon; if it is a girl, what should her name be? (a) Sarah (b) Victoria (c) Elizabeth (d) Pepper You see, my husband, Jay, somehow got into his mind that the name Pepper was appropriate for a girl. In addressing the stalemate we had reached in coming up with a good girl name, I convinced him to let me poll my organic chemistry class in an effort to gather additional data. In my class of 50 something students, only three chose Pepper. Additionally, many students wrote in things like "Pepper is my dog's name!" which only helped my case. Luckily these results allowed us to take Pepper out of the running. It turned out that the winning name with almost 20 votes was Victoria. My daughter's name is in fact Victoria.
