Can manager’s environmentally specific transformational leadership improve environmental performance?

Abstract

Drawing on the natural-resource-based view (NRBV), this research conducts an in-depth study on the relationship between manager’s environmentally specific transformational leadership (ESTL) and environmental performance (EP), and explores the mediating role of proactive environmental strategy (PES) and collective organizational citizenship behaviors toward the environment (collective OCBEs), and further exploring the moderating role of environmental concern in this process. By analyzing 304 questionnaires, these results show that: (1) Managers’ ESTL is significantly positively correlated with EP. (2) PES and collective OCBEs act as a mediator between ESTL and EP. (3) Environmental concern can enhance the positive relationship between manager’s ESTL and two types of management control systems. The above research conclusions provide management highlights for enterprise to improve EP.
