Abstract

Introduction: Compared to other European countries, Switzerland has historically had and still has excellent landline telephone provisions, in spite of a large amount of peripheral zones that are hardly accessible. As long as the national telecom operator had a monopoly on the market, the survey agencies had access to a unique telephone directory XE "telephone directories" with good coverage XE "coverage". Even though there were no reliable figures about this directory, it was generally admitted that it contained almost one hundred percent of Swiss households. Therefore, starting in the 1980s, telephone surveys were seen as the most reliable and cost-effective method for market and scientific research. This was the beginning of a real telephone survey culture.
