The Port Island is a marine cultural city complex that has been established in the center of Kobe Harbor and is equipped with modern port facilities and functional urban facilities designed to meet the needs of the 21st Century. Since its completion, the Port Island's 12 container berths and associated facilities have come to play a pivotal role in one of Japan's largest and most representative ports, while its urban facilities have been specifically designed to create a new city space that will be closely linked to Kobe's future development. These facilities include housing projects, hospitals, centers for international cultural exchanges and fashion industry events, etc. as well as parks and green areas. A new transit system, the Portliner, connects the new city space with the downtown Kobe area.
