The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is intimately involved in regulation of the neuroimmune axis. It first prevents the unrestricted mixing of the fluids of the central nervous system with the blood. If then selectively regulates the exchange of cells, cytokines, and other solutes between the central nervous system and the blood. This regulatory aspect of the BBB is accomplished through various mechanisms and is itself affected by neuroimmune physiologica and pathophysiologic phenomena.
